Kitchen handles are functional components that simultaneously define the design of a kitchen. Their selection requires weighing ergonomics, material quality, aesthetics, and the specific daily-use requirements. This guide provides a technical overview of common handle variants, handleless systems, and essential quality features for your new kitchen.

    1. Classic handle types: Form and function

    • Tubular handle: It is a straight handle mounted at two points on the kitchen fronts. Its geometric shape suits modern and linear kitchen designs. It offers a good grip area and enables safe operation, even with heavy and wide drawers. Installation can be horizontal or vertical.
    • Bar handle:Often a softer or curved variant of the tubular handle. The ergonomic shape typically has no protruding corners, reducing snagging on clothing. It is commonly used in classic or modern country kitchens.
    • Knob handle:A single-point mounted handle. It is typical for traditional country kitchens and the Scandinavian style. When operating heavy drawers, force transmission on a single point can be perceived as less comfortable than with tubular or bar handles.
    • Shell (scallop) handle:A semi-circular handle grasped from below. It is primarily used for drawers and pull-outs and is often combined with knob handles on doors to create a cohesive look in classic or industrial-inspired designs.

    2. Handleless systems in the modern kitchen

The handleless kitchen offers a calm, flat look, usually in modern kitchens. Operation is via integrated or technical solutions.

    • Grip bar (lip rail):A metal or plastic profile mounted in the cabinet carcass (often in L or C shape). The front is opened by grasping the rail. This protects fronts from fingerprints. However, the open rail can collect dust and dirt.
    • Grip recess:A recess milled directly into the edge of the front panel. This creates a very homogeneous look as no additional material is required. The manufacturing process is complex and requires precise, durable painting or coating in the recess.
    • Mechanical push to open:Light pressure on the front triggers a spring mechanism that opens the door or drawer a gap. This allows a completely smooth surface. A disadvantage is the need to touch the front directly, leaving fingerprints. It can also open unintentionally by leaning.
    • Electronic opening systems:A tap on the front activates a motor that gently opens the drawer or flap. These systems provide the highest level of comfort and are often combined with soft-close. They are, however, the most expensive solution and require a power supply.

    3. Quality features and material science

The longevity of a handle depends on its core material, surface finishing, and workmanship.

    • Core material:Handles are often made of zinc die-cast, aluminum, or stainless steel. Solid stainless handles are heavier, more corrosion-resistant, and more robust than zinc-die-cast handles that are merely coated with a stainless layer. The higher weight often indicates solid material.
    • Surface finishing:For colored or metal-coated handles (e.g., black-matte or brass look), the quality of the coating is crucial. Simple coatings can wear off at edges. More durable processes are powder coating or PVD coating (Physical Vapour Deposition), offering higher abrasion resistance.
    • Manufacturing quality:A high-quality handle has no sharp edges or burrs. The threads for mounting screws should be cleanly cut and stable to ensure a firm fit for years.
    • Mounting standard:The distance between the two screw holes of a bar or pull handle is called the hole spacing (BA) and is specified in millimeters. It is standardized on fixed grids (e.g., 96 mm, 128 mm, 160 mm), which facilitates later replacement.

    4. Recommendations for selecting kitchen handles

When choosing a handle, functionality should be considered. It is possible and often sensible to combine different handle types. For heavy drawers, robust tubular handles can be used, while for rarely used upper cabinets a more discreet solution such as knob handles or a handleless variant can be chosen to create a calmer appearance in the upper visible area.

When evaluating in-store, consider the following points:

    • Tactile feel:Does the material feel substantial? Are the edges cleanly finished?
    • Ergonomics:Can the handle be grasped well and securely? This is especially important for heavy drawers that should be tested in the showroom.
    • Stability:Does the mounted handle feel stable or does it give way under load?

A careful check of these criteria ensures that the chosen handles will convincingly function and look good for many years.
