The kitchen planning in a spatially limited environment presents a special challenge. It should not be understood as a compromise, but requires a highly intelligent and efficient plan to optimally exploit the existing potential and make the space appear larger. Success is measured not by the square meter count, but by the thoughtful arrangement, maximum storage use, and the clever application of design principles. A carefully conceived small kitchen can compete with larger designs in terms of functionality, ergonomics, and liveliness.

The key to success lies in a strategic approach. It is about making deliberate decisions and investing where they deliver the greatest daily benefit. This guide presents the most proven strategies and solutions to realize maximum functionality and an appealing aesthetic in minimal space.

    1. The Basis: Priorities for Planning Small Kitchens, e.g. Storage

In small kitchens the budget is often as limited as the space. Sensible planning concentrates the investment on elements that provide the greatest functional value, rather than integrating many expensive but less effective special solutions.

Priority 1: Drawers instead of doors in the base cabinet: The most important investment for daily comfort is the consistent use of full-extension drawers instead of doors with shelves. The ergonomic advantage is immense: instead of bending deeply to reach the back area of a cabinet, the entire contents come to the user comfortably. This not only enables access in an upright posture, protecting the back, but also provides a perfect overview of the entire contents from above. This helps avoid duplicate purchases because items are no longer overlooked. This fundamental decision affects the kitchen’s usability every day and should therefore have the highest priority.

Priority 2: A continuous work surface: A continuous, unobstructed work surface between sink and hob is the primary prep zone and thus the functional heart of the kitchen. Here more than 70 percent of all tasks occur, from chopping vegetables to plating dishes. Plans that maximize this area and allow a continuous length of at least 60 cm, ideally 80 to 90 cm, should be absolutely preferred. Any interruption by tall-standing appliances or poorly placed elements significantly reduces efficiency.

Priority 3: Good task lighting: Good, shadow-free lighting of the work area is essential for safety and usability. In small kitchens, upper cabinets or the user themselves often cast shadows on the worktop. Targeted task lighting, usually in the form of LED light strips under the upper cabinets, is therefore not a nicety but a necessity. It ensures safety when handling knives and allows correct assessment of color and doneness of foods.

Lower-priority investments and their trade-offs: Expensive mechanical corner solutions or compact appliances are often costly. Their benefit should be weighed critically against the costs. An angular cabinet with elaborate swing-out mechanics can cost as much as several meters of high-quality full-extension drawers. One must ask whether the hard-to-reach corner space justifies the surcharge or if the budget should be better invested in optimizing more accessible areas. Cooktops with integrated extractor create headroom but take up valuable storage space in the cabinet below, a resource that is scarce in small kitchens.

    2. Floor plans for small spaces

The choice of layout is determined by the room geometry. Two layouts have established themselves for small kitchens.

The kitchen line (one-row kitchen) The linear arrangement of all elements along one wall is the most space-saving solution and often the only option in very narrow spaces, such as in corridor kitchens or studio apartments. For a functional arrangement, consider the workflow. A logical sequence is refrigerator, followed by a small prep area, then the sink (as the main prep zone), a sufficiently large work surface, and finally the hob. For such a row to be truly usable, it should not be shorter than about 3 meters.

The two-line kitchen (galley) In a room width of at least 2.40 meters, a two-line arrangement often proves ergonomically superior. It allows a clear separation of work areas, for example a wet side with sink and dishwasher and a hot side with hob and oven. This leads to very short, efficient routes and makes this arrangement one of the most capable for a single person. A distance of at least 1.20 meters between the lines is essential to allow unrestricted movement and simultaneous opening of opposite drawers.

    3. Strategies for functional and visual optimization of your kitchen planning

    Optical space expansion

      • Colors: Light colors like white, cream, or light gray reflect light and create a brighter, airier atmosphere. A tone-on-tone design, where fronts, worktop, and walls are within a similar color family, avoids strong contrasts and creates a calm, spacious overall look.
      • Surfaces: Glossy fronts (lacquer, glass, acrylic) can amplify this effect through reflections but are more prone to fingerprints, increasing cleaning effort. Matte surfaces look modern and are easier to care for, but can absorb light more. A compromise is silk-matte surfaces.
      • Front design: Handleless fronts with integrated handle rails or push-to-open mechanisms create a calm, continuous surface that makes the space look larger and neater.
      • Utilization of ceiling height Tall cabinets that reach up to the ceiling maximize storage. Note that the top shelves are only reachable with a stepping stool. They are suitable only for rarely used items like a fondue set or seasonal decorations. Narrow apothecary cabinets can use recesses from 15 cm width, but are mechanically complex and thus expensive.

        Smart cabinet fittings

        • Corner solutions: In small L-shaped kitchens, using the corner is a trade-off. A pragmatic and often budget-friendly alternative to expensive mechanical systems is the “dead corner.” The corner area is left unused, which allows broader and thus more usable cabinets on the adjacent sides.
        • Base drawer systems: The space in the plinth area can be used with shallow drawers for trays or other flat items. However, this is a costly custom option.

          Multifunctional and compact appliances

          • Compact appliances: A 45 cm wide dishwasher or a compact oven (45 cm tall) save valuable space. This, however, comes with lower capacity, which must fit the household.
          • Combination appliances: An oven with built-in microwave function saves space for a second, separate appliance.
          • Cooktops with integrated extractor (downdraft): This solution makes a range hood unnecessary, contributing to a more open room feel and freeing up space in the upper cabinet.

    4. Creative and budget-friendly alternatives

    • Open shelves instead of wall cabinets: Instead of closed wall cabinets, open shelves can visually loosen a wall and make the room feel airier. They are cheaper but require more tidiness and are more maintenance-intensive as they attract dust.
    • niche systems: Wall-mounted rail systems provide space for cooking utensils, knives, or herbs without occupying work surface. Magnetic knife strips are a space-saving and hygienic alternative to a knife block.
    • Flexible elements: A slim service cart can serve as a mobile work and storage surface and, when not in use, disappear into a niche. A small wall-mounted fold-out table can be used as additional prep space or as a dining area for one person when needed.

    Conclusion: Setting up small kitchens

The functionality of a kitchen is less about its absolute size than the intelligence of its planning. In small kitchens, the key to success lies in combining visually space-expanding design elements with a consistent maximization of functionality for every available corner. Deliberate prioritization of investments in the core equipment, such as high-quality full-extension drawers and sufficient workspace, is often more sensible than using many expensive specialty solutions. A carefully planned small kitchen proves that thoughtful design and clever utilization solutions can overcome spatial limitations and create a space that is both beautiful and highly functional.
