The refrigerator and dishwasher are among the most heavily used appliances in the household. Both operate continuously with moisture, temperature fluctuations, and organic residues. From the perspective of hygiene, appliance lifespan, and damage prevention, regular, proper care is essential. Many defects that appear in customer service can be traced back to neglect or incorrect cleaning methods.
Thorough interior cleaning is sufficient in normal households about twice a year. With intensive use or frequent opening, a shorter interval may be advisable. Before cleaning, food should be removed and shelves as well as drawers should be taken out. Warm water and a mild cleaning agent have proven effective. Abrasive or strongly alkaline products attack plastics, coatings, and seals and should be avoided.
In practice, it becomes clear that it is not the interior surfaces, but neglected functional areas that lead to damage over the long term.

The condensation drain on the rear wall of the interior is often overlooked. If this drain is dirty or blocked, water collects inside the appliance and escapes uncontrollably. The condensation can reach the appliance base or the cabinet. Typical consequential damage includes swollen cabinet bases or mold growth.
Deposits can usually be removed without tools. Cotton swabs, pipe cleaners, or a thin plastic rod are generally sufficient. Lukewarm water helps dissolve grease and biofilm. This simple measure prevents a large proportion of the known moisture damage around refrigeration appliances.
Door seals should remain clean and elastic. Grease residue and dirt cause them to no longer seal properly. This increases energy consumption and puts strain on the compressor. Regular cleaning with a damp cloth is sufficient. Cracked or hardened seals should be replaced, as they no longer perform their function.
Regeneration salt is indispensable for water softening. In practice, damage often occurs due to incorrect refilling. Salt should only be filled immediately before a wash cycle. If salt crystals remain inside the appliance, they attack stainless steel surfaces. Corrosion damage in the base area is a known consequence.
The water hardness should be set according to the manufacturer's instructions. Otherwise, maintenance intervals become significantly shorter in regions with hard water.

Grease, starch, and protein are deposited not only on the dishes, but also in filters, hoses, and spray arms. About every six months, a cleaning program with a suitable machine cleaner at high temperature is advisable. This removes deposits that are not completely dissolved during normal washing operation.
Odor problems are in many cases not a sign of a defect, but the result of a lack of machine cleaning.
The filter at the bottom of the appliance should be checked and cleaned regularly. Food residues and grease impair water flow and cleaning performance. Removal is possible without tools on most appliances. Rinsing under running water is sufficient. Aggressive cleaners are not necessary.

A common mistake is opening the door immediately after the program ends. This causes hot water vapor to escape suddenly and condense on adjacent surfaces. Moisture accumulates particularly under countertops and in narrow gaps between furniture. Over the long term, damage develops there that is often only recognized late.
Modern appliances with automatic door opening work differently. They release the steam in a controlled manner and use special ventilation concepts. These appliances are structurally designed to avoid condensation in the immediate appliance surroundings. With standard appliances, restraint when opening is still advisable.
Dishwashers and refrigerators affect their immediate surroundings. Moisture and heat put strain on adjacent furniture and countertops. Appliances that continuously emit steam or heat should not be operated directly beneath wall cabinets. For countertops made of wood or laminate, additional protective measures are required, such as heat-resistant pads.
Steam cleaners are unsuitable for cleaning appliances, furniture, and fittings. The hot steam penetrates joints, causes materials to swell, and impairs mechanical components. In combination with electrical components, this creates a safety risk.
Not every problem requires a special cleaner. In many cases, mechanical wiping with suitable cloths is sufficient. What matters is loosening and absorbing dirt, not spreading it around. Specialty products should be used selectively and tested in concealed areas beforehand.
Fittings, pull-outs, and hinges are also part of maintenance care. After several years of use, readjustments are common and technically intended. Manufacturers provide instructions for this. Alternatively, a specialist can be commissioned.
Most damage to refrigeration appliances and dishwashers does not occur suddenly, but gradually. It is often the result of omitted or incorrect care. Regular cleaning, simple checks, and proper handling extend the service life of the appliances and prevent consequential damage to furniture and the building structure. These measures are neither complex nor expensive, but they do require attention and basic technical understanding.
