The initial equipment for a kitchen should be based on actual cooking and usage habits. The goal is a functional basic equipment that covers the most important work steps: storing, preparing, cooking, serving, and cleaning. Many purchases can be added later. A complete setup is not required at the beginning.
The following overview is organized by priorities.
This equipment is needed for daily use. Without it, regular cooking is only possible to a limited extent.

1 chef's knife and 1 small utility knife
2 cutting boards for separate use (for example vegetables and meat)
2 pots in different sizes
1 pan (coated for easy cleaning or stainless steel for high temperatures)
1 colander
2 to 3 mixing bowls
Cooking spoon, spatula, whisk
Note: Coated pans are often easier to handle for beginners, stainless steel pans are more durable but require more experience with temperature control.
2 to 3 plate types per person (flat, deep, small)
2 glasses or mugs per person
2 to 3 cutlery sets per person
For a household with three to four people, a basic stock of about 12 to 16 pieces per dishware type results.
Dish soap
Sponges and brushes
3 to 5 dish towels
Dish brush
Drying rack or dish basket
Waste system with separation for residual waste and organic waste
Without a functioning cleaning system, organizational effort quickly arises in everyday life, especially in small kitchens.
This equipment is useful but not essential.
Baking sheet
Baking dish made of glass or ceramic
Parchment paper
Oven gloves
Kitchen scale
Optional:
Springform pan
Small roasting pan
Whether baking accessories are needed depends on whether baking or oven dishes are prepared regularly.
Food storage containers for dry goods
Containers for rice, pasta, and muesli
Storage boxes for leftovers
Basic spice system
Glass containers are durable and odor-neutral. Plastic containers are lighter and break-resistant. A unified system is more important in practice than the material.

Kettle
Coffee machine or alternative system
Toaster
Stick blender or hand blender
Optional:
Food processor for regular cooking or baking
Many electrical appliances are used rarely. A purchase should only be made when a concrete need exists.
This equipment improves comfort but is not necessary for the basic function of a kitchen.
Measuring cup or measuring spoons
Kitchen roll
Stable storage boxes
Timer
Small step stool for high cabinets
Additional bowls or specialty pans
Especially in small kitchens, it makes sense to buy supplements only after a usage phase to avoid duplicate purchases.
A basic stock of food enables cooking immediately after moving in.
Salt, pepper, sugar
Oil and vinegar
Basic spices like paprika, herbs, and curry
Rice, pasta, or potato products
Canned tomatoes or comparable long-lasting products
This basic stock is sufficient to prepare simple dishes without extensive shopping.
In practice, recurring errors occur with initial equipment.
Too many specialized devices that are rarely used
Duplicate purchases of kitchen helpers
Large storage systems without actual need
Complete equipment of electrical appliances without usage experience
A reduced basic equipment is sufficient in most cases. Extensions can be made after the first usage phase.

A functional initial kitchen equipment is based on few, versatile basic elements. Decisive is covering the daily work routines. Additional devices and accessories should only be added when the actual need in everyday life becomes apparent.
